The neighbourhood of Gros is one of the most picturesque and authentic neighbourhoods in Donosti. It stands out mainly for being a quiet neighbourhood, very central and with a lot of cultural and gastronomic variety.

To help you understand why this neighbourhood is a must on your visit to San Sebastian, I will guide you virtually through its streets and its most charming corners.

A walk through the history of the Gros neighbourhood

The neighbourhood of Gros, located to the east of the Urumea River, has undergone an astonishing transformation over time. At first, it was an area of dunes with hardly any buildings, except for the convent of San Francisco.

Over time, with the arrival of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie in the 19th century, the neighbourhood began to undergo a significant transformation. Gros became a neighbourhood of workers and immigrants as the city expanded, which has left its mark on its diverse and welcoming identity.

There are several landmarks in this neighbourhood, the Zurriola beach, the Kursaal, and Mount Ulia on one side of the map of the neighbourhood itself.

Kursaal is San Sebastian’s conference centre and municipal auditorium, located opposite Zurriola beach and on the banks of the Urumea River. This building, designed by the architect Rafael Moneo, has become a symbol of the city and a popular venue for concerts, festivals and events.

Nature in its purest form! That is Monte Ulia, without leaving the city you can enjoy one of the most sensational hiking trails, one of the ideal plans for families.

Incredible beaches and surfing for the more daring

Also known as the surfers’ beach, Zurriola beach is a typical picture of the neighbourhood of Gros. It is a very extensive area with a wide range of water sports, and is also well known for its strong waves. During the summer months, one of San Sebastian’s best-known festivals, Jazzaldi, takes place on this beach.

Here you can see surfers of all ages, abilities and styles gliding over the waves all year round.

Zurriola beach is ideal for strolling, enjoying the sun or simply relaxing while watching the skill of the surfers in action, even if you’re not a surfing enthusiast. In addition, beach bars and activities for all ages liven up the beach during the summer.

We enjoy Basque gastronomy in the Gros neighbourhood

The Gros neighbourhood also offers an exquisite culinary experience. San Sebastian is known for its gastronomy, so there are many bars and restaurants offering traditional Basque dishes such as pintxos and fresh seafood.

The custom of going ‘poteo’ or ‘txikiteo’ is part of the appeal of San Sebastian’s gastronomy. This involves visiting various bars where pintxos and drinks are sold at reasonable prices. The Gros neighbourhood is the perfect place to carry out this custom due to its wide range of bars offering food to suit all tastes.

The chuleta (grilled cutlet of meat), baby squid in its ink, cod omelette and, of course, the delicious Basque desserts such as pantxineta or Basque cake are some emblematic dishes you can’t miss.

And to end the day… the nightlife of the Gros neighbourhood

The Gros neighbourhood is famous for its lively nightlife. After a day of exploring, you can relax in its bars, where live music and socialising are commonplace. Gros has something for everyone, whether you prefer a quiet, cosy bar or a place with music to dance the night away.

Walking through the Gros neighbourhood of San Sebastian is an enriching and diverse experience that will allow you to get to know different aspects of the city and immerse yourself in its identity. This neighbourhood offers an ideal combination for an unforgettable visit to the ‘Pearl of the Bay of Biscay’, from its history to its culture, from its delicious gastronomy to its charming beaches.

Therefore, if you have the opportunity to visit San Sebastian, you must include the Gros neighbourhood in your trip. I assure you that you will fall in love with its streets, its people and its unique essence, which will make you come back again and again. Happy travelling!
