San Sebastian has a number of the most charming beaches in the world, but undoubtedly one of the best known is Zurriola beach.

Zurriola beach in San Sebastian, formerly known as Gros beach, belongs to the city of San Sebastian and is located between mountains and next to the mouth of the Urumea river. This beach is the only one in the city that is not in the bay of La Concha.

In 1994, the beach was refurbished and remodelled. It is one of the most popular surfing spots in the Bay of Biscay in Spain, with very fine sand and a splendid colour. Surfers prefer it for its intense waves, although it is not the only sport that is practised in the area.

The fact that this beach has many sports to do is one of the main reasons why young people are the most popular visitors to Zurriola beach. There are different services such as parking, lifeguards, disabled access, toilets and showers.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, the beach also has an area for families and the general public to spend a nice day at the beach. Meanwhile, on the right-hand side of the beach, we find a younger atmosphere with the surfers’ area and beach volleyball courts, for the more energetic users.

Zurriola beach in San Sebastian, although it is not one of the most famous beaches in our capital, the truth is that this coastal area is very special for the local citizens.

A curious fact about this beach is that it is located just behind the Kursaal, a modern building where the film festival is held every year, and although the bay of La Concha may be a more elegant beach, the Zurriola beach has nothing to envy as you can see the biggest names in international cinema walking the red carpet.

Zurriola Beach for surfing

Surfing is one of the most incredible activities you will ever do. People who have done it say that surfing is addictive, not only because you get on the wave and play with it, but also because of the direct contact you have with the sea.

Zurriola beach is more than ready for its visitors to surf in the sea. As we mentioned earlier, it is one of the beaches in the Cantabrian area with the biggest waves, which is essential if you want to enjoy this sport to the full.

The waves on this beach are generally very intense and allow surfing at any tide, a factor that, as is normal, is admired by all surf lovers, as it is very rare that this sport cannot be practised due to the swell.

Zurriola beach has several surf schools and surf clubs, ideal for those who are new to this activity or for experts who still want to learn more about this sport.

If you love surfing and you visit the city of San Sebastian, you can’t leave without visiting Zurriola Beach without playing with its waves.
