Meryl Streep, Richard Gere or Brad Pitt have already come to this festival, that this year celebrates it’s 62nd edition. It is indeed one of the oldest and more prestigious in Europe, at the same time one of the biggest and more important cultural events in Spain. Not in vain it’s the only maximum category festival in the country (only 7 festivals in Europe and 13 in the whole world reach this position).

Through it’s history the festival has been chosen for holding international class events, like the world premiere of ALfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” or the european premiere of the Star Wars saga.

In over 50 years the festival has promoted new talents from the film world (Roman Polanski visited San Sebastian in the beginning of his career) and has pushed actor and director career’s like Francis Ford Coppola or Pedro Almodóvar. The festival is normally the target of many celebrities of the movie world, turning the town into the little Hollywood of Europe.

On this 62nd edition, the “Premio Donostia” (award given to honour the career of an important leading figure of the film world) goes to Denzel Washington, at the same time that the European premiere for the actor’s last film is proyected: The Equalizer. There are other awards, but these are only given to the films proyected in the official section of the festival. The jury (formed by leading figures of the cinema) awards the “Concha de Oro” to the best film, and the “Concha de Plata” to best actors (male and women) and director.  During festival days you can enjoy different premieres of the different categories in one of the many movie theaters set up specially for the occasion.  This edition will hold 121 films from 25 countries, above which we have to outline Samba, (from the directors of Intouchables) that will close the festival.

During the festival many parties take place every night in Hotel Maria Cristina, in the discos of San Sebastian, Ayete palace or Miramar palace among others, where you can find actors, producers, directors or film critics that assist to the festival from all over the world.
